He married twice.  He married an unknown person April 17, 1704.  He married Gertrud (Gartrout) Hubener (aka "Rhody") November 5, 1721.  Gertrud was born 1699.  Gertrud was the daughter of Hans Henrich Hubener and Elisabetha Straub.  Gertrud died April 4, 1766 at 66 years of age.  3-5-1999: The  information on this and subsequent records up to Dr. Quinton (Quincy) Shuford was tracked down by Joy Turner Luke. Johan brought his family from Germany to America on the Brigantine "Richard and Elizabeth", landing in Philadelphia on September 28, 1733 (by the old calendar). He subsequently settled in Berks County, PA, where he and his family lived until approximately 1755 when they moved to Western North Carolina.  His son, Johannes Schuffert (John Shuford) became the father of the Shuford family in North Carolina. Two married daughters were left behind in Pa. when the family moved to NC., were Elizabeth and Maria.

There are quite a few persons in Tyler who answer to the name of Shuford, and every person who has Shuford for a name is said to be a direct descendant of one John Shuford, who came to this country from Palatinate, Germany in the year 1750 to settle about 12 miles sourth of Hickory, N. C. Some of the local descendants include seventh generation, L. E., Ed, H. D. and Zelda Shuford, Mrs. Ruby Judge and Mrs. Walter Jones, who prepresent different branches of the family.  The eighth generation includes Harry Shuford, star on the national championship Southern Methodist University football team; Emer Shuford, assistant cashier of the Citizens National bank, and Miss. Martha Shuford. The names was originally spelled Shuferdt, but was "Anglonized" in the 1800's, the "e" being dropped from the name altogether. The first Shuford to come to America owned around 1,000 acres of land south of here, and the R. L. Shuford farm is a part of the original 1,000 acre tract. The Shuford farm is known as Oak Wood. Four hundred acres of the tract remains in the hands of Mr. Shuford, a direct descendant.  The old Shuford graveyard is on the farm.  John Shuford (Shuferdt) is buried in the plot, as are other members of the first generations of the Shuford family. W. J. Shuford, who says he is a direct descendant of the fourth or fifth generations of Shufords, said that when his forefather Shuford settled in North Carolina, Catawba County was part of Lincoln County. The original will made by John Shuford in 1788 is an old German Bible, which is now the property of Jacob Patton, of Morganton, who is also a direct descendant of John Shuferdt. A copy of the will, just as it was taken from the old Bible follows.  No corrections whatsoever have been made in the spelling. Gold is spelled gole and manner is maner.                         TEXAS,  The Dark Corner of the Confederacy. 1861

The Texas Ordinance of  Secession During the first three months of 1861, the Texas Secession Convention, in sessions extending from January 28, to February 4 and from March 2, to March 25, undertook several major projects that greatly altered the history of the Long Star State.  A resolution was passed declaring that Texas should secede from the Union, a declaration of causes for secession adopted, the 1845 ordinance of annexation repealed, a secession ordinance drafted, a Committee of Public Safety ( to act for the convention during the recess from February 4 to March 2) appointed, and an election called to allow citizens of the state to vote on secession. The actions of the Committee of Public Safety, chaired by an attorney from Tyler named John C. Robertson, were also noteworthy. The committee undertook to confer with General David Twiggs, commander of Federal forces in Texas, seeking possession of the military forces of the United States.  It appointed Ben McCulloch commander of state forces around San Antonio, Henry E. McCulloch commander of Federal posts soon to be abandoned by Union garrisons on the northwestern frontiers, and John S. "Rip" Ford commander of Brazos Santiago, Brownsville, and other posts along the lower Rio Grande.  It also authorized O. M. Roberts, president of the convention, to attempt negotiation of a loan, not to exceed $95,000.00, which was to be used for military purposes under the direction of the Committee of Public Safety.  The convention reassembled on March 2, canvassed the returns of the election held on February 23, announced popular sanction of secession, and on March 5 "approved, ratified, and accepted" the provisional government of the Confederate States of America then being erected in Montgomery, Alabama (see map 4). (Note: This map shows 17 of the Counties in Texas which voted against secession. For those interested; they were Montague, Cooke, Grayson, Fannin, Lamar, Jack, Wise, Collin, Mason, Gillespie, Blanco, Burnet, Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Fayette, Ulvalde, and Medina.) One of the most dramatic and exciting moments in this tragic series of events occurred about noon on February 2, when the delegates to the first session of the convention voted on the ordinance of secession. The convention was assembled in the chamber of the House of Representatives in the capitol building, and the lobby and galleries were filled to over flowing.  Governor Sam Houston, who opposed the secession movement, and Lieutenant Governor Edward Clark, who would fill the governor's chair in the even Houston was deposed, were in attendance. Other important state officials and influential citizens were also present. In spite of the crowded conditions, a degree of silence prevailed as roll-call vote of the convention delegates began.  As vote after vote was recorded in the affirmative, sporadic bursts of applause came from the galleries.  Seventy delegates voted in favor of the ordinance before Thomas P. Hughes,  an attorney from Georgetown, voted a resounding "no." Grumbling and cries of displeasure poured from the galleries, but the roll call continued.  Applause followed the affirmative votes of  U. S. Congressman John Reagan and former governor H. R. Runnels.  The loudest and most threatening display of disapproval from the gallery came when James W. Throckmorton, an attorney from McKinney, proclaimed that he was "unawed by the wild spirit of revolution"  and cast the second negative vote. The final tally was 171 votes for the ordinance and 6 votes in opposition, although several of the affirmative votes came later when absentee delegates returned to affix their signatures to the document. William H. Johnson and George W. Wright of Paris, A. P. Shuford of Quitman, and Joshua A. Johnson of Titus County joined with Hughes and Throckmorton to make the six who voted against secession. When the roll call was completed, a boisterous demonstration befan, and an impromptu procession formed and snaked its way down the aisles.  Many of the demonstrators were female spectators from the galleries and lobby who joined the wild march through the House chanmber. The spririt of celebration permeated the entire hall as Attorney General George M. Flournoy assumed the lead position carrying a huge Lone Star flag.  Gradually the demonstration subsided , but  an overwhelming sentiment favoring secession had been registered.  This sentiment was further demonstrated on February 23, when the voters of the state approved the ordinance by more than a thirty-thousand-vote margin. The Texas ordinance of secession, as it appeared in its final version, is reproduced below. Source:  Dudley G. Wooten, A Comprehensive History of Texas, 1685 to 1897, 2 vols. (Dallas:  William G. Scarff, 1898), 2:104-106.

I will attempt to have if prepared in 1999. "Biographical Souvenir" Book in the Tyler, Texas Library. Q. A. Shuford, M. D., is one of the oldest physicians and surgeons of Smith County, Texas.  His father, John J. shuford, was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina and lived and died there.   He was a merchant all his life, and accumulated considerable property. He married Catherine, daughter of Albert Corpening of Lincoln County, North Carolina, and she also was born, reared and died there.  Dr. Shuford is of German extraction of both sides, and is the fourth in the following family of several children, Marcus, Franklin, Levi, Fannie, Quince Adams, Henry, Pinkney, and Susan. Q. A. Shuford was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina, May 4, 1826, and was educated at Lincolnton Academy.  He graduated from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, March 29, 1849, and located at Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina, where he practiced medicine four years; came to Texas in 1854 and settled in Smith county, but in 1867 moved to Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana, where he remained until 1871, returning to Smith County. He has practiced medicine all his time since graduation, having taken a special course in the New York Polyclinic in 1883, and in the New Orleans Polyclinic in 1889. Dr. Shuford has recently issued a small pamphlet relating to the hypodermic treatment of internal hemorrhoids, which he has printed for the purpose of giving his professional brethren all the information that he can upon the subject, and at the same time benefit suffering humanity.  The doctor has himself met with wonderful success in the treatment of the disorder mentioned, and his brochure should be in the hands of every practitioner; it may be had by writing him. He married May 22, 1849, Julia Ann, daughter of Benjamin F. Petty, of Wilkes County, North Carolina; she is a native of that county, and the mother of 10 children, 5 living and grown. The Smith County, Mt. Carmel Beat, Page No. 59b, 26 July 1860 provides the following information: Last Name First    Age   Sex    Occup.    Real Val. Pers.Val. Dr. Quincy A. Shuford was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina on the 4th day of May, 1826.  He received a common school education and having decided upon the medical profession as his life work, he attended Jefferson Medical College, from which he graduated Mary 29, 1849.  He was soon after married to Julia Anna Pettey, of Wilkes, North Carolina., who preceded him to heaven December 2, 1893. He located in Newton, N. C., and very successfully practiced his chosen profession till 1854, when he came to Smith County, Texas, and located at Mt. Carmel, where he had a very large and eminently successful practice for thirteen years.   During these years he did a great deal of charity practice for the families of Confederate soldiers and widows and orphans.  In 1867 he removed to St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, where he practiced for four years.  He then returned to Smith County, Texas, and located in Tyler.  He was devoted to his chosen profession and practiced fifty-five years with great success. He kept in line with the best thought and practice of a progressive age.  he was a constant student. In 1883 he took a post graduate course in New York City.  In 1889 he went to New Orleans and took a special course and during the remainder of his life devoted himself chiefly to special practice. In 1890 the Academy of Scientific Inventions in Paris, France, unsolicited, awarded him a diploma and special medal for the invention of a speculum for the special treatment of hemorrhoids--a rare honor.  Dr. Shuford was a man among men.  He was the very soul of honor and in his sight "a vile person was condemned."  He despised every thing little and low and mean.  He loved righteousneas. A committee of the medical fraternity to draft suitable resolutions said of him:  "His character was absolutely pure. Nothing but the sweetest perfume enshrouds his character, the greatest gift to all mankind;  he loved the things which were true and beautiful."  He was an unpretentious man and naturally retiring in his disposition.  He had the modesty and purity of a chaste virgin.  He was a devoted, life-long, conscientious and consistent Christian.  In the bosom of his family and the inner circle of his friends his virtues shone most conspicuously.  He loved the sanctuary and he "tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come."  He lived more than he professed. the summons, therefore, found him "watching and waiting." He was ready.  Often had he said this to his children.  To his pastor he said:  "Looking back over my life, I have nothing to regret."  He passed away quietly and peacefully on Sunday morning, June 26, 1904 from his home in Tyler, Texas, to his happier home in heaven.  He leaves to his children and friends the legacy of an untarnished character and unsullied name and the example of a spotless life and thereby, though dead, he yet speakety.  He is gone, but they know where and how to find him.  His children are Mrs. S. W. Turner, of Gatesville; Mrs. W. T. Cherry and Mrs. Clayton E. Wood, of Tyler, and Mr. Quincy Shuford of Ben Arnold, Texas. /s/ S. W. TURNER
