Moved to Texas after 1854. This was to escape the, what he foresaw as the coming Civil War. This is according to his daughter, Martha Elizabeth Allen, who was to marry Charles Craig Wren after the Civil War. This is from an interview held by the Fort Worth, Texas Star Telegram before her death in 1942.

First wife (unknown) produced six children. Janet, is a distant cousin of my wife, Gail Wren Drewa. She states that "the brothers and sisters of Bryant died in Georgia and Alabama. Don't try to find them in Texas. After you find Bryant's family, you need to start looking in Georgia. The information I am giving you is backed up by legal documents." Our heartfelt thanks to Janet for this assistance. I received this information on the following day I returned from Dangerfield, Morris, County, Texas. For the few hours I was able to look at documents in the Courthouse, I located some "Allen's," but didn't know who they were. /s/ Vernon Drewa.
Janet had found a note, while researching the internet, looking for information on the Bryant Allen family in Morris, Red River, Franklin, Marion and Upshur Counties. I didn't leave one on the Cass County query board. So it was quite a coincidence that we were able to connect. And the Wren family, I know is very grateful for her research efforts and input to this book.

Caroline died March 2, 1868 in Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas, at 49 years of age. November 1998: Photographed the burial location of Caroline Buchanan Allen. She and her husband, Bryant Lee are interred in the Harris Chapel Cemetery, next to the Harris Chapel Methodist Church, which is some 6 miles south of Hughes Spring, Texas. Between Lone Star and Hughes Spring. A number of their grandchildren are also interred in the family plot. Some one of the girls married into a Turner family, for they are also interred in the Allen plot. Regret that I didn't clean the Turner headstones and others to photograph, but it was raining, nasty out and didn't want to ruin my camera equipment.

Bryant's on 1860 Census for Cass County, Texas as B. L. Allen #305. Bryant's children are listed in the Jasper County, Georgia census of 1850. Mrs. Janet Allen Braley was gracious enough to provide dates of marriage, birth, Caroline's maiden name ( Buchanan ) and much more information. She is one of the Descendants of William Allen, who was Bryant's eldest brother. My wife, Beverly Gail Wren Drewa is a distant cousin of Janet. /s/ Vernon Drewa
Bryant Lee Allen went to Morris County from Eudora, Georgia in the 1850's according to Janet's husband, Larry. However, Caroline and Bryants daughter, Martha E. Allen married Charles Craig Wren, (who was the Great Grandfather of my wife, Gail) gave an interview in the Ft. Worth, Texas Star Telegram which stated that her father and 11 family members came to Texas in 1859, along with his slaves. Primarily to escape the thought of having to be involved in a Civil War. However, at that point in history, Texas was giving large amounts of land as an inticement to those who would relocate. i.e. Single Male could homestead 160 acres, married couple 360 and so on. Unless there is an actual record, it would be hard to state definitively that the impending Civil War cause there move to Texas. Bryant is on the 1860 Census of Cass County, Texas under B. L. Allen. He shows up on the 1880 Census of Morris County in their original Census as B. L. Allen. Burial location of Morris County for Bryant and Caroline is taken from Martha's newspaper statement.

Some History of Dangerfield, Morris County, Texas, which I researched:
Daingerfield, County seat of Morris County, Texas since 1875, was the county seat of the ephemeral county of Paschal (present counties of Hopkins, Franklin, Titus, Morris, Cass and part of Marion) during 1841 and existed before 1841.
This settlement existed before 1841 and was founded either by a group of Acadians who left their homeland bound for French Territory via the St. Lawrence, the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, Red and Sulphur Rivers or Big Cypress Bayou, or by a Captain London Daingerfield who fought the Indians at the "Daingerfield Spring" in the 1830's. Daingerfield has been a part of the counties of Red River, Bowie, Paschal, Titus and Morris County, Texas and Miller County, Arkansas.
The original townsite (Allen Urquhart Headright Survey) consisted of forty-nine blocks. The streets were named for heroes or officials of the Republic ( Bowie, Crockett, Fannin, Lamar) and for members of the commission named by the Congress of the Republic of Texas to lay out the site of the seat of justice of Paschal County ( Hughes, Peters, Broadnax, Frazier and King). Daingerfield was on a Republic of Texas Mail route in 1841.
In 1846 John Greene Chambers was named the first United States postmaster. Mr. Chambers also represented Titus County at the Secession Convention of 1861. Daingerfield has always been a "Church and a School" town. During 1841 and 1842, Rev. James Graham, circuit rider for the Sulphur Fork Circuit, Arkansas Conference, Methodist Church and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Weatherred conducted a school here. In 1846, a forty acre tract of land adjoining the townsite was described as " the Campground of the Methodist. "
In 1849, Allen Urquhart, pioneer surveyor for the Republic of Texas, entered into an agreement with the Marshall Presbyters of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for the establishment of a college in Daingerfield. Urquhart gave (40) acres of land and pledged one half of the proceeds from the sale of his remaining lots in the original town Plat for the erection of the college buildings. This college, Chappel Hill, operated from 1852 until 1869 when it was closed due to lack of students and finances. The college building was condemned due to a crack in the wall, torn down, and approximately 100,000 bricks were salvaged and sold for $9.00 per thousand.
During the Civil war (probable 1862) the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, organized the Daingerfield High School with a collegiate department which was authorized by the State Legislature in 1873 to issue "Certificates of Graduation" in the Collegiate Department. In 1880, this school was operating under the name of "The Jefferson District High School".
The Daingerfield Independent School District was incorporated in 1902 and the Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, transferred their Daingerfield school properties to the Independent School District in 1906.
The Primitive Baptist Church at Bethlehem was organized near Daingerfield in 1843, the Church at New Hope was in existence before 1844 and the Church at Spring Hill organized in 1852. The Building or "Meeting House" of the Primitive Baptist Church at Spring Hill was constructed in 1859 and following 1964 repairs, is in an excellent condition ( Open by appointment for visitors). Records of the Churches at Bethlehem and at Spring Hill indicate schools at Tankersley's Goffey's and Mayfield's ( families residing in the Daingerfield area) during the 1840's and 1850's.There were also "Regular" and Missionary Baptist Churches in the area at an early date and a Baptist School for girls was organized about the time of the Civil War. Lumber and grist mills were located in and around Daingerfield during the 1840's.
Hussey and Logan, Manufactures of cotton gins and corn mills located here in 1855, (the father of Governor O. B. Colquitt was later associated with this firm) and shipped mills to all parts of Texas. Groceries, distilleries, manufacturers of shoes, saddles, bridles and other leather goods were located here, both before the Civil War and after.
During the Civil War, the incomplete Reece Hughes blast furnace (South-east of Daingerfield) was taken over by the State of Texas and operated for the benefit of the Confederate States of America. (Part of the furnace is now located at the plant of the Lone Star Steel Company.) Many of the landmarks of Daingerfield have been destroyed by fire. There was at least one fire in "Old Town" before the Civil War and another in the late1870's. The present business district was struck by fire in 1928 and again in 1953. There was also a disastrous "Livery Stable" fire about 1890. Among the older buildings remaining in Daingerfield, are the Peacock or Colquitt house, the Orange and W. T. Connor homes just North of town and the "Law Office" of United States Representative John L. Sheppard ( father of Senator Morris Sheppard), State Senator John M. Hnderson, and State Land Commissioner, J.T. Robinson. Cemetery markers record burials as early as 1844 ("Dorgasa Griffith, born July 19, 1830, died December 1844: in the Reynolds Cemetery west of Boggy Creek on Highway 49) and include markers for veteran of the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil, Spanish-American, and World War I and II.
At least two veterans of the Texas War of Independence are buried in outlying cemeteries. A Historical marker "Daingerfield, C. S. A." ( was erected on the "Old Town" square by the State Building Commission in 1965 and Morris County Historical Survey committee erected a marker at the site of Chappel Hill College. Other markers in the area are: Caddo Trace, near the entrance to the State Park on Hwy. 11; Rogers Cemetery, on the old Daingerfield-Hughes Springs Hwy. North of the State Park, and Logan & Hussey General Store, on the old Mt. Pleasant Hwy. near Leslie's Farm Supply. Much of the natural beauty of the area is preserved in the natural woodland of the Daingerfield State Park built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930's and on the shores of the lake of the Pines, South of Daingerfield.

The following was provided by Janet Allen Braley to Vernon Drewa.
"Old Letter found in great grandparents ( Allen Barnes ) papers as it was written. All words spelled as Harris spelled them." "December 1, 1852. Dear Nephew, it is with pleasure I takemy pin in hand to inform you that your letter came safe home which is offered us sattisfaction to hear from you and connections and tohear that you were all well. Your lines found us all well with the exception of Calas and the connections are well as far as I know. I am glad to hear that your father is doing well. There has been a great deal of sickness here since you left and some deaths Matilda Cunard is dead. She died with tiphoid fever same Mr. Cunard wife is very sick with the same disease at this time. It is thought to be very contagious. It is the most fatal disease Iever knew. Our crops are tolerable good considering our lands. I shall make about thirty bales of cotton. I sold to Webb at 9 1/4 and 9 we have made a good crop of corn, our cribs are nearly full one more time: the boys suppose that we have gathered nearly six hundred bushels of potatoes. As you named about your trade I will mention mine I have purchist berryminds Zocry lands. four hundred acres, I give forty one hundred dollars in two payments and was offered 4500 after I bought it, land is risen considerable hear since you left and negros are high also, I have now fifteen hundred acres of land such as it is. I expect to be buried here. If I die at home my Mothers word was that a rolling stone never gathered much moss. Briant (Vernon Note: This is Bryant Allen - Gail Wren Drewa's Great Great Great Grandfather )is trying to by lands-he has bargined far two lots and the men both backed out. More and more there seems to be a much spirit of trading here as I ever knew in bying lands, and negros, horses and mules and hogs and so forth. some a trading and some sick and a dying and so time roles on. If gabrel was to blow his trumpet what an alarm it would beto many. death is one of the mos solum things our minds have resting upon them. We all well know that life and health are both uncertain. but as far death we know is certain. Whenever our time has arisen to depart from the world we must go whether prepared or unprepared. I think it one of the most escential things in the world to hold our selves in readiness to meet the grim monster of death. But Allen I fear if this was our last day we had to live we would not be prepared to travel to the mansions above where all the holy saints will meet God around his throne, death is not confined to the old or middle aged. It is us all. We may be in fine glee today but before the rising of another sun we may be called away silent. We can't be compared to nothing else but the flowers of the feels today they spring up and flourish, but tomorrow when the scorching sun shines upon them they drop their heads and die. Just so with us we are merry today but tomorrow we may die, I must cum to a close, give my best respects to sister and your wife and receive the same ar your self. Write when feel like it. I should keep corresponence with you far well until death. /s/ Harris Allen

11-2-98:
Information from, Marylee W. Knight of Panola, Texas reflects that George Henry moved to Mineral Wells.
Harris Chapel Cemetery has four Allens, who are such age to have been Bryant and Caroline Allen's grandchildren:
Bryant Allen (1879-1879)
Alley Wood Allen (1883-1885)
Auto Allen (1870-1887)
Lena Allen (1876-1878)
Joe Lane Allen, who submitted his pedigree chart is the son of Henry Lane Allen.
Henry Lane (1880-1940) is also buried at Harris Chapel Cemetery, so Joe Lane must be connected to the bunch you are tracking. The four youngsters listed above, judging from their Do13s, are possibly siblings of Henry Lane Allen, who would blow my theory of L. M. and nor George Henry being the one to linger in the area.
George Henry Allen married Lena Patillo, according to the pedigree chart of Joe Lane Allen.
Back to the "Marriage and Death Notices", page 24. May 9, 1905 issue of "The Cass County Sun"...."We are pained to hear of the death of Mr. Zack Patillo, which occurred at his home at Avinger, Texas on Monday, May 1, 1905. Mr. Patillo was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Cass County."
With the Allen's being buried near Avinger and a Patillo dying at his home in Avinger, it at least puts them in the same area at the same time. Zack Patillois not listed i the Cass County cemetery index, so he must be buried in Morris County and that well could have been where G. H. and L. M. got their marriage licenses. /s/ Marylee

So, this give you a different direction to look for ole' G. H. Mineral Wells lies jointly in Parker and Palo Pinto Counties....life is never simple. When I answered you last night and said that my only Allen connection was through Pearl (Knight) Allen, I was completely forgetting about Thomas Earl's great aunt, Virginia "Jenny" who married Abb Allen. Now there is a truly colorful character. He was from a Marion County line of Allen's, never heard tell of him having any ties with Monroe Allen's bunch, but then he is one those people about families never speak. I have found out a lot about him, to my delight and the Knight's dismay. Jenny and Abb are both buried at Friendship Cemetery, Lanier Community, Cass County, Texas. At one time I tried tracking their children, but it was a dim trail and I fainfly gave up. One of their sons ended up in a State mental institution, the others apparently just ekked out rather miserable existences.

His cousin, Charles Robert Alen ( the one who bankrupted the store), still lives in Linden and, of course, could tell you more about the store than Thomas Earl could. No, Thomas Earl and Charles Robert are not close....the Knights were the country mice, the Alen the city ones. /s/ Marylee

107 i. Octu4 Allen was born in Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas October 4, 1870. Octu died September 3, 1887 in Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas, at 16 years of age. Her body was interred September 1887 in Harris Chapel Cemetery, Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas.
Nov. 1998:
Photographed grave site of Octu, who was 17 at the time of her death. She was the grand daughter of Bryant Lee and Caroline Buchanan Allen. All are interred at the Harris Chapel Cemetery, Hughes Spring, Texas ( Between Dangerfield and Linden, Texas). All documents which I have researched, have this young lady named as OCTO. However, the actual headstone carving has a "U" on the last letter. I would tend to believe the headstone. The headstone was photographed with 35mm camera, digital camcorder, then used video enhancement to reproduce the headstone in its original state. When that was done, her name is "OCTU." /s/ Vernon Drewa
108 ii. Lena Allen was born in Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas January 7, 1876. Lena died June 16, 1878 in Hughes Spring, Cass County, Texas, at 2 years of age. The following obituary was located from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram from August 1942:
DEATH CLAIMS MRS. WREN, WHO KNEW CIVIL WAR DAYS
At 96 She Followed Trends of Present Conflict; Funeral Services Scheduled Tomorrow at 3 P. M. War left its stamp on the life of Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Wren, 96, who died last night. It was not the present conflict, however, but one of more than 70 years ago--the war between the states. Mrs. Wren's two brothers, her brother-in-law and the man who was to be her husband, the late Capt. C. C. Wren, all fought with General Lee. Afterward, she lived to see her world change completely, then lived to see it in the process of another change. Until a few days ago, Mrs. Wren's mind was clear enough to follow with interest the progress of world affairs and political events. Although during the past five years she had seldom been out of the house at 3220 Avenue G, where she made her home with her only son, Hurd Wren, she was unusually strong for her age and mentally alert. Born in Georgia Mrs. Wren was born Feb. 12, 1846, 12 miles east of Covington in Jasper County, Ga., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant L. Allen. In 1859 the 11 members of the Allen family brought their household furnishings and slaves to Texas. They traveled overland to New Orleans, by river boat up the old bayou to Jefferson, and again overland to a site 25 miles west of Jefferson, where they settled. In 1868, Martha Elizabeth Allen married Capt. C. C. Wren, then a merchant and farmer. Here 20 Years They lived in Dangerfield for many years before moving to Muskogee, Okla., where Mr. Wren died in 1906. Mrs. Wren and her son came to Fort Worth about 20 years ago. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Other survivors are seven grandsons and six great grand-children. Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. tomorrow at Polytechnic Methodist Church. Rev. W. W. Ward will officiate, assisted by Rev. J. F. Adams of Grapevine. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. 7-21-1998: Note from Jack Allen Wren, Jr. "If you're talking about Hurd Sr. mother, I was fortunate enough to know her. She died in the same year as Mammaw (Hurd Sr's. wife). I think I do remember her name was Martha, but all we kids called her Granny. She dipped snuff and as a kid I use to go out and cut her a peach tree small linb and take a hammer and flatten the end of it to make it like a brush. She dipped that in her snuff and then sat with it in her mouth. Guess tobacco did not kill people back then. She lived to be a 100 ( Ed. Note: Actual obituary says "she died at age 96"). She lived with Pappaw and Mammaw for as long as I could remember. Back during the depression, a lot of us lived together. I can recall when Mammaw, Pappaw, Granny, my mother and dad, my sister and I, and Tunie and Bob all lived in the same small house on Avenue F., near Poly Hi. I believe Uncle Gerald & Aunt Edith lived next door to us.
Martha Elizabeth Allen and Charles Craig Wren had the following child:
+ 111 i. Robert Hurd4 Wren was born December 8, 1870.
65. Mary B.3 Allen (Bryant Lee2, Harris1) was born in Georgia 1846.
She married Maynard G. Harris in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas, December 4, 1860. Maynard was born April 12, 1830. Maynard died June 23, 1880 in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas, at 50 years of age. His body was interred June 1880 in Harris Chapel Cemetery, Hughes Springs, Texas. Nov. 1998: Photographed this old Cemetery. Maynard Harris was a Capt. 8 Brig. TX Mil. CSA. Capt. Harris, who settled here in 1846, gave the 6 acre plot on which to build a church. The cemetery was started in memory of his daughter. ( I haven't located those records /s/ Vernon Drewa) Several Harris family graves inside wrought - iron fence, only one tombstone. Cemetery and Church are located approximately 6 mi. south of Hughes Springs, Texas. ( It was raining as I photographed the burial locations of the Allen family. This is an extremely rural area and could not locate anyone to question about a community known as the Harris Chapel area. /s/ Vernon Drewa)
When this couple married, Mary was either 14 or 15, and Maynard was 30. This county was named Davis County when this couple married.
Mary B. Allen and Maynard G. Harris had the following child:
112 i. NoFirstName4 Harris was born in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas. NoFirstName died in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas. Nov. 1998: This child has no markings. Since there are several other Harris family members interred here, and in all likely hood, Mary lived into the 1900's, should be able to obtain a death certificate, which should aid in researching the family. Cass County was non in existence when this child's mother and father married. It was called Davis County.

86. Jefferson Davis4 Allen (Mucan N.3, William2, Harris1) was born in Newton County, Georgia September 22, 1862. Jefferson died July 30, 1943 in Pueblo Community, Callahan County, Texas, at 80 years of age.
He married Marie Carolina Deason in Jasper County, Georgia, February 21, 1884. Marie was the daughter of Benjamin Deason and Mary Hardy.
The following was provided by Janet Braley:
Jefferson Davis Allen was born in Newton County, Georgia, the 22nd of September 1861. He married Maria Carolina Deason, daughter of Benjamin Deason and Elizabeth Hardy, of Jasper County, Georgia on the 21st of February 1884. The exact date they moved to Bosque County, Texas is not known ( 1884). His son, Beauford related to me that Jefferson Davis worked on a ranch in Bosque County, and made $86.00 a year. The Allen family was close friends to the J. C. Dyer family and Beauford believes his father worked for Mr. Dyer there and was persuaded to move to Callahan County and work on another of his ranches there. When the Allen family first moved to Callahan County, they lived in Mr. Dyer's 23 room ranch house till the Dyer family arrived, then they moved about 100 yards north into another house of Mr. Dyer's. This was in the spring of 1906. J. D. Allen rented enough land from Mr. Dyer to farm and with the money from his first crop, he paid $500 in cash as a down payment on 320 acres of land designated on a map as lands of the Peter's Colony of Texas Emigration and Land Company, on file as survey number ( 3197). Jefferson Davis agreed to pay the full sum of $2,240 for this land with as payable in four notes of $435 each on Oct. 1, 1907, 08, 09 and 1910. During this time, Jefferson Davis had been putting his money in the Moran Bank to save for his payments on the land. He heard a rumor that the bank might go under, and fearing for his savings, he walked all the way into Moran along the railroad tracks, withdrew his money and walked back home. The Allen family continued to live on Mr. Dyer's place till the spring of 1907 when their home place was built. The land had been part of the Cottle Ranch and was a thicket of trees. Jefferson Davis with the help of his two sons, Cleveland and Oliver, cleared 120 acres of the land with only one mule and stump puller that weighed about 150 pounds. The first year enough land was cleared to start farming and the second year saw the completion of the 120 acres cleared and four room house built. The children attended school at Erath which was north of Eugene and Bonnie Green's place. Jefferson Davis and his wife, "Carrie," were strong Baptist believers and raised all their children to follow their teachings. They drove into Colony, 3 miles away, to church. Colony had ony a brush arbor type tabernacle, but the Allen family attended church there for almost 20 years. When the Pueblo Missionary Baptist Church was built in 1924, the family moved their letter closer to home. Jefferson Davis was Buried in the Dennis Cemetery, Bosque County, Texas, near the Pueblo Community. Note for Marie Carolina Deason: Copied from a clipping Wilma's book. Funeral services were held for Mrs. J. D. Allen in the Moran Baptist Church Sunday, June 21, 1942. The local pastor A. A. Palmer, Asst. by H. D. Blair. Mrs. Allen was born in Montecello, Georgia, July 2, 185 and married February 22, 1884. She died in the old home in Pueblo Community about 2 P. M., Saturday, June 20th. To this union were born 12 children - 8 girls, 4 boys. They came to Texas in 1884 settling in Bosque County, where they lived until they came to this vicinity and built their home where it now stands in 1905. They were Charter members of Pueblo Baptist Church which was organized soon after they came to that community. Children of Jefferson Allen and Marie Deason are:
1. Annie May Allen, b. December 2, 1884; d. 1977; m. Joseph Elijah Burnam.
2. Mittice Lou Allen, b. 1886; d. 1953; m. Bill Welch.

Jefferson and his wife Marie were parents of 12 children. This is also the great grandfather of Janet Allen Braley, who provided me with this data. They left for Texas in 1884 to Bosque County. When the Allen family first moved to Callahan County, they lived in Mr. Dyer's 23 room ranch house til the Dryer family arrived, then they moved about a hundred yards north into another house of Dyer. During this time, Jeff had been putting his money in the Moran Bank to save for his payments on the land. He heard a rumor that the bank was going under and fearing for his savings, walked all the way to Moran, got his money out of the bank and walked back home. Four generations of the Wren family photographed Monday night when Mr. and Mrs. Hurd Wren, 3220 Avenue G, were honored on the eve of their golden wedding anniversary at a reception given by the Texas Wesleyan College and Polytechnic Methodist Church in the College parlor. J. Allen Wren , son of the couple, held his daughter, Janey, aged 14 months, for the photograph. Mrs. Mattie Wren, 94, mother of Hurd Wren, is seated between Allen and Hurd. Mrs. Hurd Wren is at the right.
GIFTS AND GREETING UPSET GOLDEN WEDDING PLANS
Expecting to spend a quiet golden wedding anniversary exchanging memories, Mr. and Mrs. Hurd Wren were surprised Tuesday at dawn when a series of telephone calls began and a constant stream of floral gifts arrived at their door. The couple had thought their celebration ended Monday night when Texas Wesleyan College and Polytechnic Methodist Church honored them with an informal reception attended by four generations of the family. A dinner given by five of their sons Saturday night inaugurated their observance. Wren, who operates the "Ram Book Store" at TWC, was born near Jefferson, Texas, in 1870. A year later, Fanny Kay Thompson was born in Fort Gaines, Ga., and came to Mount Vernon in 1888, where she met Wren and became his bride two years later. An unordained Methodist preacher for 16 years, Wren is a steward at Polytechnic Methodist Church. The couple have seven sons to congratulate them.. Their three daughters are deceased. Oldest family member of the reception in the college parlor was Mrs. Mattie Wren, 94, mother of Wren. She makes her home with the pair at 3220 Ave., G, and joined three grandchildren of the couple at their celebration. The nonagenarian, who came to Texas from Covington, Ga., just prior to the Civil War, is the widow of a Confederate veteran, Capt. C. C. Wren, who died in 1906. Sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hurd Wren are Herman of Dallas; Ewing, Robert, Gerald C. and J. Allen, all of Fort Worth; Ashton of Birmingham and Hurd Jr. of Washington. Ashton and Hurd Jr. were unable to attend their parents' celebration, but will telephone greetings Tuesday night. President Law Sone of TWC and Rev. W. W. Ward, pastor of the Polytechnic church, were among reception guests. College students aided and gave a musical program. Interred: Ft. Worth, Texas. Robert Hurd Wren

Robert Hurd Wren and Fannie Kennon Thompson Marriage is recorded in Book B, Page 207 at the Franklin, Texas court house.
Mrs. Hare at the Franklin County Historical Society was most helpful with me in looking up data on the family. She also advised that they are now in the process of recording all graves and cemeteries in Franklin County. It is believed the parents of Fannie are interred in the "City Cemetery", a very short way North of Town. Drove through it, but too hot to get out and walk the Cemetery. Need to check periodically to see if they have located the Thompson's and also "Leta Wren, " who was the twin of Herman Wren is interred here. She lived but three years. Martha Hare Box 289 Mt. Vernon, Texas 75467 Married in Mt. Vernon, Texas April 23, 1890 by Rev. J. B. Stringer, Primitive Baptist Minister.

June 28, 1998:
Messages have been left on the Texas Gen Web for the Hurd Wren family in the following counties. Marion, Morris, Red River, Franklin and Fannin. Charles Craig married in Morris or Marion County in 1868.
Nothing known about his reasoning for coming to the Morris or Marion County area of Texas. His son, Robert Hurd Wren was born however in Morris County in 1870. If directions are correct from his mothers records, Martha Elizabeth Allen, her father settled about 25 West of Jefferson which could be the area which is now covered by Lake of the Pines. Or could be near Ore City, Upshur County, Texas. Charles was a Merchant and Farmer when they married. It is known that Charles and Martha resided in Dangerfield for a period of time and am certain that Dangerfield is where Hurd was born. Hurd married in Mt. Vernon where his eldest son, Herman was born. Herman had a twin sister, Leta who died a few years later in Clarksville, Texas. Hurd and Fannie lived in Mt. Vernon until shortly before 1895 when they moved to Clarksville, Texas. They then moved to Ladonia shortly before 1897. They remained in Ladonia until late 1904, when the family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. Please refer to the text records of Charles Craig for the families time in Muskogee.

Located a photograph and obituary write- up in the Ft. Worth Press as follows:
Hurd S. Wren Sr.
(Note: Believe this is the first time an "S" has appeared in his name)
Hurd W. Wren, St., 90 of 917 Ayers, retired veteran advertising executive and Methodist may-minister who died Monday , will be buried in Greenwood after funeral services at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Moore Chapel here. Rev. H. Loyd Brown will officiate. Active pallbearers will be Ned Henry, T. C. Clary, L. T. Martin, R. D. Smith, N. L. Payne and Bill Kerr. Date of article is February 1, 1960. 7-25-1998: The following provided by Jack Allen Wren, Jr. " Speaking of Effie reminds me. You might check on the name Grogan or Grogen, or something like that as being the last name of Hurd Sr's wife ( Ed. note: This would be incorrect, as I have a copy of the original marriage recording from Mt. Vernon, Franklin County, where R. Hurd Sr,. and Fannie Kennon Thompson. /s/ Vernon Drewa) I remember we had a lady that we all called Cousin Effie that lived in the TCU area, and she was an old maid cousin of my Grandmother Wren (MawMaw).
7-25-1995:Checked with Mrs. Edith Wren this date. She said that she remembers well a "Cousin Effie." Her last name was Groggan and was a cousin of "Geralds." (Ed. Note: Meaning Gerald Wren. If she was a cousin of Gerald's, it would support a claim, that there might have been more Wrenchildren, than Hurd Sr. Or else, this Mrs. Groggan was a descendant of the sister/brother of Fannie Kennon Thompson.) Edith said that Effie's last name was spelled Groggan. And, that she always seemed found of Gerald. However, she appeared to come on to other family members, that they were beneath her station. She did have a daughter, which Edith can't recall at this time. Gail, my wife, recalls visiting her after she was grown! She doesn't remember at what age she was however. Edith says that, "she was apparently very wealthy," because the Wren's couldn't understand why she donated her estate to TCU, rather than them. Gail, also said that she thought she was an old maid.
Robert Hurd Wren and Fannie Kennon Thompson had the following children:
+ 171 i. Herman5 Wren was born November 3, 1891.

Leta was the twin sister (Per Franklin County Court Documents) of Herman Wren. She died in 1896 in Clarksville, Texas. She was either brought back or sent back to MT. Vernon for burial. Since the County hasn't compiled a cemetery and burial location for those they have death documents. Documents indicate she is interred in the "City Cemetery", along with Robert Thompson, her Grandfather. Other Thompsons are listed in the Cemetery documents, and perhaps if they are all buried in the same plot, it will give some indication if Fannie Kennon Thompson had siblings.
173 iii. Ashton Wren was born in Clarksville, Texas May 9, 1895. Ashton died March 18, 1951 in Atlanta, Georgia, at 55 years of age. His body was interred March 21, 1951 in Ft.
