WILLIAM RUSH

The Rush family moved into North Carolina as early as the Mid 1700's.  Abstracts of deeds, birth records, and wills establish that they first settled in Virginia along the Potomac River.  In Virginia State Library Hatton's Original List of Immigrants, page 81, can be found this entry:

"These names to be transported to St. Christopher's imbarqued in the Mathew of London" 21st May, 1635 William Rush, age 20.

We can know that Benjamin Rush II, born in 1715 was the son of Bengames, the younger son of William and Elizabeth A. Rush.  Their birth dates are uncertain but the inventory of the personal property of William's estate made Jan 22, 1708 (Record Book 4, p. 165 Deeds of Wills, Westmoreland County, Virginia) leads one to believe his death occurred in 1707.  Benjamin II, his grandson, married Amy Elkins and settled in King George County at least as early as 1722.  In 1761 he established himself on the Broad Run in Prince William County, Virginia and later moved to North Carolina where he died in 1801.  The Marriage Bond of Benjamin Rush and Alice Grigsby, the original of which is in the Theological Seminary at Alexander, Virginia, states that they were married April 1st, 1744 in Stafford County, Virginia. The birth records show that each of their nine children were born in Virginia. Elizabeth married Joel Terrell and William married Jack's sister Abigail Terrell.  As you follow this family you will find Joel, Abigail, and Terrell used often as given names.

William, the son of Benjamin II was born in 1755 in Virginia but moved to North Carolina as early as 1774 proved by the Marriage bond in Bute County, North Carolina.  Another record found n the Family Bible in his wife, Abigail's hand writing:  "William Rush, my husband departed this life 25th day of January 1827…had been a resident of Montgomery County, N.C. 40 years.  He was aged 72."

This record shows he was in Anson County in 1787 a part of which became Montgomery County in 1779. He and Abigail reared a large family.  In the same Family Bible can be found:  " I myself was born Feb. 1st 1755.  Abigail my wife was born June 8th, 1760.  Set down by myself this 15th Feby. 1808. Signed Wm. Rush, Sr."

The day and date of my marriage which happed on the 9th of February, 1775.  You will see here the ages of all your Brothers and Sisters also: Benjamin Rush was born June 18, 1776; Sarah Rush was born Oct. 4, 1778; Molly Rush was born Feb. 16, 1781; Grigsby Rush was born May the 20th, 1784; Rebecca Rush was born the last day of March, 1787; Terrell Rush was born Aug. 12th 1889; William Rush, Jr. was born Mar 10, 1792; Annie Rush was born Feb. 12th, 1799; and Alice Rush was born March 22nd, 1801." William Rush and his father, Benjamin (1715) both fought in the Revolutionary War.  Descendants may join the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution through their service.  William was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons 1792-1794 when it met at New Bern.

As early as the late eighteenth century the Rush and Harris families were neighbors and friends. Two of William and Abigail Rush's children married into the John Harris family: Benjamin married Lucretia Harris, Alice married Arthur Harris and Grigsby married their cousin Priscilla Harris.

John Harris was born May 27, 1741 in Tarboro, Bute County, N.C.  It is interesting to note that the Marriage Bond of William and Abigail Terrell Rush is recorded in the Bute County Marriage Bonds. John Harris was living in Anson County in 1775 for he witnessed a business transaction between Thos. Wilson and Henry Mounger.  In 1779 he was one of he petitioners that "humbly prayer that Anson County be divided by an East-West line from Cumberland County crossing the Pee Dee River to the line of Mecklenburg County to form Montgomery North of such a line."

The Rush and Harris Families were active in the life and improvement of their pioneer communities. They lived along the Fayetteville Road in the southern part of the County in the Mt. Gilead, Cheek's Creek, and Rocky Springs sections.  Here there were naval stores and lumber to harvest. The Bottom Lands produced good crops.  The cotton and naval stores were wagoned to the Cape Fear at Fayetteville where a ready sale awaited for shipments to European Countries.

Today descendants of the Rush family of early settlers can be found in the Pekin, X-Way, and adjoining areas making good, law abiding, and productive citizens.

Bruton-Harris Family

Masten Leak Harris and Annie Rebecca Bruton were married on September 20, 1887 at the home of her mother, Mourning Baldwin Bruton of Onvil, by Reverend Frank Shamburger.

Most of their ancestors had lived in the county for many years.  There were two Harris families who came to this area before the Revolution. They were second or third cousins when the came to Anson County from Granville County, Virginia. There was the West Harris family and the family of John Harris.

John Harris (b. 1741) married Patience Taylor. One of his daughters, Lucretia, married Benjamin Rush.  They had two daughters, Patience and Abigail, who married Eli and David Harris.  The Harris brothers were sons of Arthur Harris (b. 1758).  Arthur was the son of Henry Harris.

The first Rushes to come to America arrived about 1635.  William Rush (b. Feb. 1, 1755) son of Benjamin and Alice Grigsby Rush was granted a large tract of land, over 2000 acres in the Pekin section of Montgomery County.  He was married to Abigail Terrell whose ancestry has been traced back to Charlemagne. Both Benjamin and William Rush fought in the Revolution.

Mastin Harris was born in 1858 to David and Abigail Rush Harris (b. Feb. 12, 1818, d. Mar 18, 1904).  They were married n February 27, 1834. Fourteen children were born to them, ten sons and four daughters.

Her granddaughter, Jessie, said that grandmother Abigail taught her to sew and to quilt when she was a little girl.  Abigail's great granddaughters have bedspreads that were knitted by her.  Her minister wrote these thoughts about her after her death.  "She was always loving and uncomplaining. Her fortitude and resignation were evidence of the faith that dwelled in her.  The world is made richer and better by her life of faith."

Annie Rebecca Bruton was born August 10, 1866 to Calvin J. (b April 1, 1827. d. Dec 22, 1886 and Mourning L. Baldwin Bruton.  They had two other children, David Dudley Bruton and Elizabeth Bruton Shamburger.

Mourning Bruton was one of the thirteen children of Dudley and Rebecca Roper Baldwin, who had come from Richmond County after their marriage and operated a large plantation in the Pekin section.

When Calvin Bruton died his minister, Frank Shamburger, said of him, " Calvin Bruton was a Christian-hearted man, plain and unassuming in his manner.  He was a friend to the poor.  His tender feelings would cause him to indulge men, when it would have been to his interest and right not to have done so.  The community in which he lived, and the church of which he was a faithful member will miss him.   But the influence of good, put in motion by this good man, will live on and on, enabling and beautifying, long after he is gone". He was on a trip to Fayetteville, N.C. to buy supplies when he died.

Where does one begin to write a family history when so many forebears are to be accounted for? The early Harris and Rush Families (pre-Revolutionary) were hardy pioneers with little wealth, a limited education blended with plenty of common sense, enhanced by an adventurous spirit, a will to work, tenacity, and faith in their ability to care a future in a new land. Then believed freedom could be found in a democratic society that held moral and ethical values foremost.

Among those who petitioned the General Assembly to divide Anson County and establish Montgomery County in 1779 were "Henry Harris, Arthur Harris, son of Henry Harris…. West Harris, son of Henry Harris".  In those same abstracts of Anson County is found this entry " Henry Harris to Arthur Harris, his son, a Negro boy."

After Montgomery County was formed the Legislative Papers Tax List 1780-82 show "John Harris 400 acres…Arthur Harris, single 310 acres, 1 slave". It is difficult to keep the family lives from being confused as John, Arthur, Westley, Henry, and other given names were used so frequently. Marriage Bonds, Witnesses to documents, deed, and such papers as well as list of children help.

Arthur Harris, son of Henry Harris, was born 20th of July, 1758 and died 25th of December 1818.  He was married to  (1) Frances Ledbetter, daughter of Charles and Frances Randle Ledbetter and (2) Sarah Clark (born 1775, died April 2, 1832).  His two sons and daughter by Frances moved to Mississippi or Tennessee.  Another son Calvin may have stayed in North Carolina.  The "Sarah Harris Book" (Bible) which is now in the home of this writer gives the birth of Sarah and Arthur's four sons: Eli (8-20-1798), Thomas C. (9-22-1801),  David (8-25-1804) and Reddick (8-16-1810).

Arthur Harris served in the House of Commons for four terms (1797-1800). West Harris, his brother, and William rush had served in the House when it had met in New Bern earlier.  Later in the 1707 through 1802 terms,  West served in the State Senate.  In 1837-39 William Harris, Arthur's son represented the County in the House of Commons. Later he moved to Mississippi.

Eli Harris married Patience Taylor Rush eleven years before his brother David married Abigail Terrell Rush, Patience's sister. Thomas C. married Ann T. Williams and Reddick married Rebecca Amy Mask ("Old Billy's daughter").

Before the Civil War several of the Harris young people moved to the Western District, on the "Canetucky" or Tennessee.  As already mentioned some moved on to Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Cotton had become a profitable crop in those states after the invention of the gin.  Farming was not the only enterprise of these families. They firmly believed in educating their children who in turn became successful in commerce and economics.  Many entered the professions; lawyers, and social organizations and the business world. It is quite a tribute to the very early women of these families that they were literate as evidenced in correspondences with their families and records recorded by them.

In a letter dated April 12, 1834 to Grigsby and Priscilla Harris Rush written by Benjamin and Lucretia H. Rush mention is made of the poor corn crop made the previous year and that corn was scarce and costly. "Old Father Henry Ledbetter paid 500 silver dollars for one hundred barrels of corn."   Little pork had been fattened and "many would have to depend on the Kentucky drovers for meat."  They had subscribed to the Fayetteville Observer on the 22nd of October.  "From what I read and hear there is great distress in the commercial cities and consequences of removing the deposits and there is a great number petitioning and praying for relief, but Old Hickory appears to be infeasible."  Money appeared "to be tolerable plenty among local industrious cotton farmers."

In this long letter they told "Our daughter Abigail was married the 27th day of February (1834) at 16 years, 15 days old to David Harris." Patience married David's brother Eli February the 20th, 1823.   How grateful we should be that these letters and family Bibles have been preserved for without them much of the family's vital statistics would have been lost when the Montgomery County Courthouse burned in 1835.

Buried at the Kennerly Chapel Cemetery, Logan County, Kentucky. 8-2-2000:  The following information provided by:  Mrs. Pat Foster, descendant of Grigsby Rush: Rev. Dr.  Grigsby Rush ( 1784-1845) was born in North Carolina to William Rush (1755-1827) and wife Abigail Terrell (1760 - 1835).  In 1809 he moved to Maury County, Tennessee, and then to Logan County, Kentucky, in 1812, where he located in the vicinity later known as the Spa community ( Eakins, Kennerly's) Licensed to preach in 1809. One early writer described him as a "terror to the evil doers, and praise to them that did well" (Blakey, Men Whom). Rev. Rush was one of the early pastors at Kennerly's Chapel Methodist Church at Henrysville and was closely associated with the Kennerly and Henry families.   Elizabeth Henry named him as executor of her will in 1828, and he was appointed as administrator of John W. Kennerly's estate in 1830. Rush married Priscilla Harris (1781 - 1842) in April of 1803, a daughter of John Harris (1806 - 1740).

Martin and Elvira's children were Benjamin, Nancy E., Martha J., and Joel G. Rush. Martha Rush ran a mill on Rush Mill Road (now known as Stuart's Chapel Road or Highway 1151), and was highly successful businessman. At his death, he devised some 1700 acres of land to his wife and children--some of which remains in ownership of his descendants today, namely Ruth ( Holland) Cauley and her husband Floyd, their son Tony and wife Vita, and daughter Patricia and husband Carol Foster. Martin and Elvira Rush's son, Benjamin Franklin Rush, married Nancy "Nannie" Harris in 1876.  She was the daughter of Lemeul Harris. Their children were Martin Rush, Ollie Bell (Rush) Holland (both whom resided in Lewisburg), Maggie (Rush) Poe ( resided in Hopkinsville, Kentucky), and Ada Andrews ( resided in Los Angeles). (Eakins, Kennerly's).

        The following was prepared by Ruth Holland Cauley and Sue Spurlock and titled;

 GRIGSBY RUSH FAMILY

. Rev. Grigsby Rush (1784-1845), an early north Logan pioneer, was born in North Carolina to William Rush ( 1755-1827) and wife Abigail Terrell (1760-1835). In 1809 he moved to Maury County, Tennessee, and then to Logan County, Kentucky.  In 1812, where he located on lands west of the now extinct village of Henrysville ( Eakins, Kennerly's).

Mr. Rush was one of the more brilliant of the early pioneer settlers, and records show he used his talents wisely and for the betterment of the community ( see Grigsby Rush papers).  Besides his ministerial license, he earned several other titles in his remarkable seventy-two year lifespan.  he carried the title of "Dr.", but it is not presently known whether the title was indicative of his ministerial training or medical training.  In the early 1830's, he served as a Justice on the Logan County Court--earning him the title of Esquire. In 1839, he was appointed by the Governor of Kentucky as Sheriff of Logan County, an office he held through 1840. He was licensed to preach in 1809, and one early writer described Rev. Rush as a "terror to the evil doers, and praise to them that did well" (Blakey, Men Whom, pg. 1).  He is said to have assisted Rev. Phillip Kennerly as pastor at Kennerly's Chapel, following Kennerly's development of a serious medical problem which impeded his speech. Rush married Priscilla Harris (1781 - 1842) in April of 1803, a daughter of John Harris.  Ten children were born to Grigsby and Priscilla: Elizabeth (b. 1804), Nancy Anne (b.-1805) who married Samuel Gilbert, Abigail (b. 1807) who married Henry France, William Terrell (b. 1809) who married Harriet Campbell, Jane (b. 1811) who married James Gilbert, Sarah (b. 1814) who married Awben Campbell, Martin (b. 1816) who married first Martha Jane Arnold and secondly Elvira A. (Morrow) Downer, Emeline (b 1819) who married Robert Harris, Benjamin (b. 1823), Miranda Catherine (b. 1825) who married William Jogo (birth years from the Grigsby Rush family Bible record). Following the death of Rev. Phillip Kennerly in 1821, Rev. Rush presented a bond to the Logan County Court signed by the late Rev. Kennerly, dated 1812, which pledged that Kennerly or his heirs would make a deed for the Kennerly Church grounds.  Rev. Rush then petitioned the Logan County Court to arrange with the Kennerly heirs for a deed to the "Kennerly Meeting House" and grounds (OB 8/242-43). As a result of his action, the United Methodist Church still owns this hallowed ground, where many of north Logan's early pioneers were laid to rest. In 1840, Rush erected a mill near the mouth of Elk Lick Fork of Mud River (OB 10/102), and, in early 1841, the court ordered a road to be laid out from the mill to intersect with the Greenville Road (now Highway 431).  Rush Mill Road, an early north-south route was named for this mill ( now known as Highway 1151 or Stuarts Chapel Road). Following his wife's death in 1842, Rev. Rush married secondly a lady whose given name was Sarah Jane (1787 - 1843). All three are buried in Kennerly's Chapel Cemetery.  In May of 1844, Rev. Rush married a third time to Nancy Harris (1795 - 1870).  He died the following year at age sixty-one. Rev. Rush's son Martin Rush (1816 - 1861) married first Martha Jane Arnold, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Kennerly) Arnold. Before Martha Jane's untimely death in January of 1850, three children were born to them:  Elizabeth (b. 1840),  Mary S.  (b. ca. 1845), and William T. (b. ca 1849).  Martin then married Elvira A. (Morrow) Downer, widow of Walker Downer. Martin and Elvira's children were Benjamin, Nancy E., Martha Jane, and Joel Grigsby Rush. Martin followed in his father's footsteps and was a highly successful businessman.  He inherited his father's mill and ran it until his death. In 1850, he was one of nine commissioners appointed by the Legislature of Kentucky to divide the county of Logan into magisterial districts (Equity Suit 182, #4829).

At his death, he left nearly 1700 acres of land to his wife and children--some of which he had inherited from his father. Some of this land remains in the ownership of Martin's descendants today, namely Rught (Holland) Cauley and her husband Floyd, their son Tony and wife, Vida, and their daughter Patricia and husband Carl Foster. Martin and Elvira Rush's son, Benjamin Franklin Rush (  1851 - 1938), married Nancy "Nannie" Harris in 1876, daughter of Lemuel harris.  Benjamin and Nannie's children were Martin Rush ( who married Ermine Poe) and Ollie ( Rush ) Holland -- both of whom resided in Lewisburg, Maggie (Rush) Poe, who resided in Hopkinsville, and Ada ( Rush) Andrews, who resided in Los Angeles. At age fifty, Benjamin Franklin Rush professed faith in Christ and began preaching, first with the Methodist denomination and then with the General Baptist denomination. But once he was converted, "he never missed an opportunity to speak a word of enlightenment to any he chanced to meet" (Eakins, Kennerly's, pg 10). In 1904, Benjamin was a co-founder of the Claymour Campground Meeting, held annually just over Logan County's western border in Todd County. Many people from north Logan County have attended and enjoyed the interdenominational meetings throughout the years. (Other Commissioners appointed to establish the Logan county magisterial districts were James M. Beall, C.A. Wilson, K. C. Mason, S.H. Gordon, Dillard Duncan, William Haden, Benjamin Fugate, and Notley Conn. Please note that in the book entitled "A History of Lewisburg and North Logan County, Kentucky," a mistake was made in the listing of Benjamin and Nannie Rush's children.  The children are listed correctly above. ---  This note made by Sue Spurlock, as corrected by Ruth Holland Cauley.) 11-1-2001:

This information is from a long letter written to Grigsby and Priscill at Harris Rush April 12, 1834, by Benj. and Lucretia H. Rush mention is made of  the poor corn crop made the previous year and that corn was scarce and costly.  "Old Father Henry Ledbetter had paid 500 silver dollars for one hundred barrels of corn. " Little pork had been fattened and "many would have to depend on the Kentucky drovers for meat. "  They had subscribed to the Fayetteville Observer on the 22nd of October.  " From what I read and hear there is great distress in the commercial cities and consequences of removing the deposits and there is a great number petitioning and praying for relief, but Old Hickory appears to be infeasible." Money appeared  "to be tolerable plenty among local industrious cotton farmers."

In this long letter they told "Our daughter Abigail was married the 27th day of February, 1834 at 16 years, 15 days old to David Harris". Patience married David's brother Eli February the 20th, 1823.  How grateful we should be that these letters and family Bibles have been preserved for without them much of the family's vital statistics would have been lost when the Montgomery County Courthouse burned in 1835.

The said Dr. John William Rush died intestate on July 18, 1933. Document, dated March 5, 1999, from law firm of Secrest and Secrest, 210 West Main St., P.O. Box 35, Scottsville, Kentucky, 42164. The aforementioned property was sold at at a Master Commissioner's Sale by Kelly, D. Powell, Special Master Commissioner, Allen Circuit Court by Civil Action No, 98-CI-0155. Sale of property was held at the City-County Building, 201 West Main Street, Scottsville, Kentucky, on Friday, March 12, 1999, at 1P. M.

This action was initiated by Nora Elizabeth Crum Ellis on behalf of the heirs of A. J. Rush.

The reason was the property division was down to 1/7th of 1%, which made it unreasonable to maintain proper accounting of dividends.  Which in this case, Nora took on that responsibility.

Since I was heir to my mother's ( Juanita Maxine Shropshire Drewa) share, I, along with several others gave our permission for the sale.  Nora had the burden of traveling to Scottsville, Kentucky on many occasions to check on timber ( Large Walnut trees) oil royalties, and boundary infringements, and with others taking no interest in the property. Along with additional subdividing share rights as other generations came along, in a few years it would have been too expensive to sell. A transcript of aforementioned description of A. J. Rush property was published in the local newspaper prior to the sale.
