Descendants of Thomas Mercer, Sr.

 First Generation

       1.  Thomas1 Mercer was born in Pennsylvania January 3, 1793.  Thomas died July 28, 1865 in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee, at 72 years of age.

He married Elizabeth McIrving.  Elizabeth was born in Virginia May 28, 1800.  Elizabeth died November 9, 1860 in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee, at 60 years of age.  Elizabeth is buried at the Long's Bend Cemetery.

According to Hawkins County, Tennessee 1850 Census, Elizabeth McIrving was 50 years of age.

The following was located on page 110 of "Long's Bend and Its People," by the Hawkins County Historical Society.

Thomas Mercer was born January 3, 1793 in Pennsylvania; died July 18, 1865 at the end of the Civil War.  He was a farmer.  His wife Elizabeth McIrving was born in Virginia according to the 1850 Census,  at which time, she was fifty years old.

The 1830 census records her birth as between 1800 and 1810.  The cemetery book for Long's Bend Cemetery has Elizabeth born May 1, 1828; died November 9, 1890. There is a discrepancy between the tombstone dates and the census record as to the dates of their births. (Note from Vernon Drewa, who is Elizabeth's GGGGrandson. According to the Hawkins County 1850, District 16 Census, Esther her daughter was 22 years of age.  This would put the birth of Ester in the year 1828.   Land transfer documents in book 44, pages 81 and 82 in Hawkins County, Tennessee Courthouse, identify Ester as being the daughter of Thomas Mercer.  And of course, Thomas wife was Elizabeth.  The write up as to Maggie's transfer of land is under her maiden name of Margaret Mercer, whose mother was Ester, whose mother was Elizabeth.).

       Their children were listed as:

         Joseph, born in 1832, TN;

        Thomas, born 18 Sept. 1835, TN; died 30 Apr 1912; buried Long's Bend;

Jane born in 1838, TN; and Bettie, born after 1838.

     1. Joseph Mercer was born as per tombstone records, 11 June 1832; d. 06 Mch 1903; buried Long's Bend. He was a 3-Cpl during the Civil War in the 3rd Mounted Inf., B Co., USA.  Joseph married Emaline Fry who was born 25 December 1835; died at Kincheloe, 19 Mch 1909, at age 75, and was buried at Long's Bend.  She was the daughter of Sarah & Jacob Frye.  Jacob Frye was a gravestone maker according to the census of 1850.  He probably made some of the tombstones at Long's Bend.

Thomas, Age 11; Sex, Male; Place of Birth, Tennessee.

Jane, Age 12; Sex, Female; Place of Birth, Tennessee

(Vernon's note:  Thomas Mercer and family reside adjacent to his daughter Esther, and her husband, James Tucker. In the same census, James and Esther house in order of visitation is 142.   These would have all been in the Mercer Community of Long's Bend, Hawkins County, Tennessee. James Tucker was 36 at this census and Esther was 22. This area of visitation is but two from the Branch Tucker family who are listed in order of visitation as number 139.) Jane and Bettie could be the same person. Jane's name is listed in the 1850 census and the name Bettie is identified in Long's Bend and It's People (Hawkins County, Tennessee) book.

6    v.    Bettie Mercer was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee after 1838.

 Second Generation

       2.  Esther2 Mercer (Thomas1) was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1828.  Esther died 1853 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, at 25 years of age.

She married James Tucker in Hawkins County, Tennessee, about 1850.  James was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1814.  James was the son of Archibald Tucker and Patsy (Dorothy) Galaspy or Gillespie.  He married Elizabeth Patterson.

3-1-1999:

Received information this  evening from a 4th cousin, Mr. J. B. Arnold.. He provided me with much background on my great grandmother, Margaret "Maggie" Branch Tucker Shropshire's family. His great grandfather was Abijah Tucker, who was the brother of James Tucker.

        J. B. and I had chatted on the computer a number of times. Since I plan to visit  Rogersville, Tennessee,  in the Spring, it will be very nice meet he and his wife. This is one bit of humor that I didn't know existed in the Census. J. B. located this in the Hawkins County 1870 Census,  it has a caption opposite James Tucker’s name.  James Tucker was "alone, and a man of leisure."   You don't see entries such as that very often.

It does make you wonder where his 19 year old daughter Margaret, and 17 year old son Branch were living!

In the Hawkins County 1840 Census: James Tucker would have been 26 years of age., and in the Alexander Tucker household, there were two males between the ages 20-30.  No James Tucker is identified in this year’s census. Could he have been at his brother's when the Census was taken?

In the Hawkins County 1850 Census: District No. 16, HW County, Tennessee Dwelling Number: 142 Families numbered in the order of Visitation: 142 Names:

James Tucker, age 36, Laborer, Born: Tenn.

Ester Tucker, Age 22, Born: Tenn.  Note:  Ester is residing near her parents, who are listed as dwelling number 141.  Please refer to Thomas Mercer's Text.

In the Hawkins County 1860 Census: Line 1067:

             Tucker, James       46  Male

            Margaret                9  Female

            Branch                   7  Male

It is most likely Esther, James wife died when Branch was born or very young, because both were farmed out by 1870. Or Maggie was farmed out and Branch was deceased. No records located as to his death, or burial location.  For that matter, none has been located for James Tucker. Since Margaret carried the "Maggie" with her through out her life, it must be assumed this was a family name. It is predominate throughout the Tucker family.

Maggie Death Certificate identifies her as, Maggie Branch Shropshire.  She is interred in Dallas, Texas. Please see her record for documentation.

James was with Esther in the 1850 Census of Hawkins County, Tennessee. His age listed as 36 and she as 22.

4-22-99:

Received the following from J. B. Arnold.

Located a voters list yesterday of Hawkins County for 1874.  James Tucker was listed, so was living at that period. Esther was most likely the 2nd wife of James, and Elizabeth Patterson the 1st wife.  In 1870 census, he is alone and says he is living an easy life.

7-2-2000:

Located on the Hawkins County, Tennessee web site:

A James Tucker is on the 1811 Tax Rolls. ( Vernon's note:  Don't know where this James fit's into the big picture.) Located in the Hawkins County Marriage listings for 1824 - 1846:

Tucker, James        Hicks, Emaline        18-Dec        19 Dec 1841.

February 20, 2000:

From Hawkins County, Tennessee, 1850, District 16 census; Esther Mercer and her husband James Tucker are identified as husband and wife. Both were born in Tennessee.

From Hawkins County, Tennessee 1850 Census: District No. 16 Dwelling Visited 142 Families Visited 142 Names:

James Tucker, Age 36, Male, Laborer, Born: Tennessee

Esther , Age 22, Female,  Born:  Tennessee (Note: Ester was apparently residing near her parents. Thomas and Elizabeth Mercer are listed as household 141, with 3 children residing with them. Refer to Thomas Mercer text.)  Ester's son, Branch was born in 1853.  Margaret was born in 1851. No burial location for Ester has been located.  No addition data has been located as to any mention of Ester after the birth of her son Branch.  It is most possible, that whoever has the Thomas Mercer family bible will have the recordings of Ester and Branch's deaths.

Esther Mercer and James Tucker had the following children:

    +      7    i.    Margaret "Maggie" Branch3 Tucker was born November 11, 1851.

8    ii.    Branch Tucker was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1853.  In HW County, Tennessee census of 1860, Branch is 7 years of age and his Mother is not mentioned.  Only his father,  James and sister, Margaret.  They were residing in District 5 during this census.

          3.  Joseph2 Mercer (Thomas1) was born in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee June 11, 1832.  Joseph died March 6, 1903 in Hawkins County, Kincheloe, Tennessee, at 70 years of age.

He married Emaline "Sally" Frye.  Emaline was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee December 25, 1835.  Emaline was the daughter of Jacob Fry and Sarah Fry.  Emaline died March 18, 1909 in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee, at 73 years of age.  Vital Death Records show she died March 18, 1909, age 75, daughter of Sarah and Jacob Fry. Joseph was buried at Long's Bend Cemetery.

The community in which he died was Kincheloe, Tennessee, and was but a short distance from the old "Mercer" community.  Kincheloe had the nearest Post Office. He was a 3-Cpl. during the Civil War in the 3rd Mounted Inf., B. Co., USA. Though this information was obtained from the Long's Bend Cemetery book, birth dates show that Joseph's mother, Elizabeth was but 4 years of age when he was born.

Joseph Mercer and Emaline "Sally" Frye had the following children:

            9    i.    Thomas3 Mercer.

+    10    ii.    Martha J. "Mattie" Mercer was born 1854.

11    iii.    Betty Mercer was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1856.  She married Jackson Mowl.

+    12    iv.    Sarah Lucinda (Sis) Mercer was born 1856.

13    v.    Rachel (Matt) Mercer was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1858.  She married J. L. Britton in Hawkins County, Tennessee, January 13, 1880.  Rachel M. and J.L. were married by E. F. Kincheloe, and the Bondsman was her grandfather; Thomas Mercer.

14    vi.    Louise (Lou) Mercer was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee 1861.  She married Zollie Phipps.

    +    15    vii.    Elizabeth S. ( Toad) Mercer was born May 19, 1862.

       4.  Thomas (Jr.)2 Mercer (Thomas1) was born in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee September 18, 1835.

He married twice.  He married Melinda Crawford in Hawkins County, Tennessee, January 31, 1867.  He married an unknown person in Hawkins County, Long's Bend, Tennessee, April 30, 1912.  Mercer, Thomas Crawford, Malinda  29 Jan 1867 31 Jan 1867 Long's Bend Cemetery Book from which this information was taken, have Thomas mother, Elizabeth as being born on May 1, 1828.  As with all of Thomas Sr., and Elizabeth's children, it is believed that Long's Bend records noting DOB for Elizabeth are incorrect.

Rogersville, Tennessee Death Records also record Thomas Mercer, Jr., as having been born in 1837 and died in 1912. These death records also note that Emalie Mercer died in 1909. Hawkins County, Tennessee 1900 Census has " Joseph Merecer, M, Age 67, residing in District 4, page 56-A." His last name is actually Mercer. It also notes a "Mercer, ___, no sex, no age and residing in District 4, census page 56-A." It also notes a "Mercer, ___ , no sex, no age and residing in District 18, page 246-B." It also notes a "Mercer, ___ , no sex, no age, and residing in District 16, page 48-B." It also notes a "Mercer, Thomas, M, age 64, and residing in District 4, page 56-A".  Joseph and Thomas Jr. were brothers.

Thomas Mercer served with the Confederacy in the 39th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry. Which was designated;  "Infantry" Regiment.

History of the 39th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry.

39th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 31st (W.M. Bradford's) Regiment, was organized in March, 1862, and in April contained 363 effectives. Its members were from the counties of Sevier, Bount, Jefferson, Hawkins, McMinn, Green, and Monroe.  For a time the unit served the Department of East Tennessee, then was attached to A. W. Reynold's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.  A Detachment of the 39th captured the Federal gun boats "Queen of the West" and "Indianola," and later the regiment spent forty-seven days in the trenches of Vicksburg where it was captured on July 4, 1863.  After being exchanged and reorganized as mounted infantry, it was assigned to General Vaughn's Brigade.  The Unit contained 272 effectives April, 1864, moved to the Valley of Virginia, and lost forty-one percent of the 118 engaged at Piedmont.  Later it participated in various engagements and surrendered at Asheville, North Carolina, on April 26, 1865.  The field officers were Colonel William M. Bradford, Lieutenant Colonel James W. Humes, and Major Robert McFarland.

Thomas (Jr.) Mercer and Melinda Crawford had the following child:

    +    16    i.    Robert3 Mercer.

 Third Generation

       7.  Margaret "Maggie" Branch3 Tucker (Esther2 Mercer, Thomas1) was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee November 11, 1851.  Margaret died December 31, 1929 at 78 years of age.  Her body was interred January 1, 1930 in Grove Hill Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.

She married John Garfield Shropshire May 28, 1874.  John was born in Honeycutt, Hawkins County, Tennessee 1835.  He married Vonnie (Nancy) Sexton in Honeycutt, Hawkins County, Tennessee, March 7, 1855.  John died about 1900. Last documents identifying him by name are contained in a 1903 edition of the Greenville, Texas phonebook..

                                            John Shropshire

John was born in 1835 in the Honeycutt Community (Verified from his Marriage License) and married his first wife, Nancy Sexton in Hawkins County March 7, 1855.  They had a son; Wiley Shropshire. Wiley married Anne Price. John then married Margaret (Maggie) Branch Tucker on May 28, 1874 by W. J. Phillips, M. G. (Minister of the Gospel).  Maggie is interred in Dallas, Texas along with the four sons she and Sam produced. John's marriage to Margaret Tucker is recorded on page #20 in Microfilm reel, MF 033, Ref., 929.3, Marriages June 1865 - Dec. 1880. It is believed that John's burial location is in or near Greenville, Texas.

Nancy Sexton (first wife) was 19 at time of Marriage to John Shropshire. They had one son, named Wiley or Willy, which would have been a half brother to Sam Shropshire. John is not identified in the 1900 census.  Only Maggie Shropshire, along with the 4 boys.  No mention is made of John G.

May 29, 1997:

On a visit to Greenville, Texas, located their first published telephone book (1903).  In the alphabetical listing side, the listing is as follows: Mrs. Maggie Shropshrie, 303 W. Lee C. B. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee S. G. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee J. G. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee

George and James Frank were not listed as being employed because of their age. James Frank (B: 1892) would have been 11 years old. George E. (B: 1885) would have been 17 years old. In the Street Section of the Directory, the listing was as follows: Shropshire, Mrs. 303 Lee St.   Phone # 202 Mr. Note: John Garfield must have worked at his trade in Greenville in 1903, otherwise there would be no need to list him in the telephone book. However in one of my correspondences with Mrs. Katherine Cullen King, Shropshire Society Genealogy group at 8502 West Boulevard Drive, Alexandria, Va. 22308, she states that states that Maggie is listed as a widow in the 1900 census. So as to why Maggie is a widow in 1900 and in 1903 telephone book identifies John G. as a shoemaker is strange.  I have requested information from the local genealogy group. Perhaps they can come up with something.

Since Charlie was born in Hawkins County in 1892, John and his family had a short window in which to get as far as Greenville, Hunt Count, Texas. The next date of a telephone directory in the library was 1911, with no Shropshire’s listed. Was unable to locate a J.G. or John Shropshire in any of the Cemeteries in Hunt County.   Nor for that matter was a Death Certificate identified in the State records from 1903-1940. Thus the whereabouts at death of J. G. Shropshire still remains a mystery. Please refer to Maggie Shropshire text. Links to the family tree. Many request come to this department for links to Revolutionary Soldiers who settled in Tennessee. For benefit of persons searching for some Patriotic deeds of their ancestors. A list is printed  for some of those men who received pensions from the Federal Government for their services.  In 1818 an act was passed by Congress granting pensions to soldiers of the revolution. This act was very rigid and comparatively few persons could qualify for benefit under its provisions. In 1828, a second pension act was passed by Congress which was some thought broader, but which was still not inclusive enough to help some of the soldiers who helped win the War of 1776. By 1832, which was 49 years after the close of the Revolution, public interest had so crystallized for the veterans who won independence, that congress included even Militiamen who had had three months service in the struggle for freedom from British rule. In the next year or two, many of the Veterans who had survived to this date qualified before their County Courts to obtain such pensions and in 1835, a list of such men by states was published by Congress. A supplemental list was published. After publication of the Pension roles of 1835 Veterans continued to qualify for Revolutionary Pensions and a supplemental list of these men was published in the proceedings of the Second Session of the 25th Congress, House document  444. This list is hard to obtain and the section pertaining to Tennessee is printed for the benefit of our readers; "Section 3 (contains) names of pensioners who have been added to the rolls of each agent since August come May 1834; to which.the last report of pensioners names was made to Congress. Section 4 contains names of all who have died or who have been dropped off by the commission of pensions since Aug 1834.  /s/  J. L. Edwards, Commissioner of Pensions.

"To Honorable H. J. R. Poinsett, Secty. of War." Section 4, which is deaths of pensioners since last report. Nashville Agency invalid. Act of 1818; amongst other names listed is William Shropshire.

The following is from Tennessee Cousins, a History of Tennessee People. Published by the Genealogy Publishing Company, Baltimore, Maryland 1980.

Hawkins County was established by the Legislature of North Carolina in 1786 from Sullivan County, at the time the state "of Franklin" was existence, which had given it Spencer County.   Under the territorial government by Blount, beginning 1790, the name of Hawkins County continued in use until statehood, and then afterwards.  My check of the records shows that territory was thereafter appropriated from Hawkins County, as follows; part of Claiborne County, 1801;  part of Grainger County in 1796; part of Hamblem County in 1880;  part of Hancock County in 1844; part of Jefferson County in 1792; and part of Knox County in 1792. Sullivan County, at least the upper parts of it were believed to be part of Virginia, until the line was surveyed , but of course no one ever thought that Knox or Jefferson Counties were in Virginia. The following is the History of Rogersville, Tennessee. The town of Rogersville was built on land belonging to Joseph Rogers, the son in law of Thomas Amis, the early Pioneer of the Hawkins County settlement. Godspeed says that he settled on the lands in 1786, and that in 1787 the commissions appointed for locating the County seat made a report in which they said they had selected a site on the lands of Joseph Rogers on Crocketts Creek. The creek then called by that name runs through the town now, and is suppose to have gotten its name from the Crockett family. The following tombstone inscriptions of the Rogers family show that Joseph settled there in 1786; Joseph Rogers, born in the County of Tyrone, Ireland August 21, 1764 came to the United States in 1784 and settled here and founded the Village of Rogersville, 1786,  where he lived until his death November 1838. Mary Rogers, daughter of Thomas Amis, and consort of Joseph Rogers born in the County of Duplin (the spelling is how it was listed in the publication I was reading for later dictation), North Carolina August 22, 1770, died November 30, 1833. Elizabeth Mae Rogers, daughter of Joseph and Mary Rogers born October 26, 1790 and died April 23, 1809. The above inscriptions were copied from page 191, Acklen's Tennessee Tombstone inscriptions, children of Joseph Rogers and wife Mary Amis Rogers, were;

January 2001:

The following was located sometime ago in the Hawkins County 1812 Civil District Census.  /s/ Vernon Drewa

Civil District 11:

Apologies for this incomplete description.  My copy is chopped off at the left hand corner so I will list its landmarks. Begins at Crocketts Creek, down the river to the mouth of Andrew Galbreath's branch.. Shorts Mountain..ridge that connects Stone and Shorts mountains...head of Clouds Creek...mouth of McAllister's branch of Poor Valley creek.. Top of Clinch mountain.. boundary of District 10...Powells saltworks...Pine mtn at saltworks gap to little poor valley and up creek to Sulphur Springs to the top of Stone mtn then along to Orville Rices and Robert D. Youngs and with said road to the Flag Pond...Jacob Wax's plantation on Stock Creek where Henry Blevins formerly lived then with the house where Orville formerly lived to the road crossing Caney Creek to the land that divides the land of Thomas and Daniel Lip...across Caney knobs to line between James McClure and Lawson to Crockett's creek.  Election to be held at Christy Shank's.

Among the large number of names listed here, these are the names most likely connected to the Shropshire Family.

Wm. Shropshire, James Tucker and many Price's.  Since there were two Tucker families in HW County at this time, this particular James Tucker could be from the family that lived north of the Holston River. ( Note:  The aforementioned information provided for research purposes. /s/ Vernon Drewa)

  Maggie Branch  Tucker

Maggie must have been a very industrious person. She purchased burial plots for herself and sons by selling wood, and washing clothes.   She even purchased  land near Tomball, Texas, which was eventually bought out after her death  by her son, Charles. Maggie is interred in Oak Grove Cemetery in Dallas, Texas along with her sons, James Frank, George E., Charles, Samuel Garfield. Block 28, lots 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Kenneth Shropshire (Maggie's grandson) provided the following information:  Maggie's last known address was Lattimore and Gush St., in Dallas, Texas. As of 9-20-92 still trying to locate her husband's (John Garfield Shropshire) interment location.

May 1997:

Went to Greenville, Texas library to research Shropshire family. The following is from the 1900 census.  Age of Charley Branch do not match the marriage date of Maggie. Writing for Maggie's death certificate to resolve this. "Maggie Shropshire, Age 49, Born: Hawkins County, Tenn.. is listed in 1900 census. Vol. 62. E. D. 121 Line 20, Sheet 17. She resided on West Bourland St., with John and son's; Charley Branch, May 1875,  Age 25, Born: Rogersville,  Hawkins County, Tenn., Samuel Garfield, Jan. 1882,  Age 18, Born: Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tenn.. George E.  Nov. 1885, Age 14, Born: Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tenn.. James Frank, Jul.  1893, Age 6, Born: Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tenn."  (Records at Oak Grove Cemetery in Dallas denote age birth and death dates of James as:7/13/1892 - 6/11/70. It is strange that her husband, John, is not identified in the 1900 census.   I was able to view and take notes , but not copy, the Greenville, Texas. 1903 telephone book. Population was 9239 this year. Listing shows Mr. and Mrs. Shropshire at 303 W. Lee St.  However the major phone listing was under Mrs. Maggie Shropshire. Others listed under Maggie Shropshire: C. B. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee St. S. J. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee St. J. G. Shropshire, Shoemaker, 303 W. Lee St. (This is husband of Maggie.) Perhaps George and Frank were to young to get into a trade. Also identified in phone book:  Lee St.  runs East and West through the city, forming north side of square, the line of reckoning for all streets running East and West. Nothing about the Shropshire family in the 1911 Telephone directory, which was the next the library had from 1903. Also researched the Hunt County Cemetery Inscription records and could not locate a Shropshire.   Nothing in the county death records for that period. The 1903 Telephone Book was the first published for Greenville, Texas. They were married by W. J. Phillips, M. G. (Minister of the Gospel). Samuel Garfield Shropshire of Garland Ave, Dallas is identified as the informant for her death.  She was residing at 723 Crockett in Dallas at the time of her death.  Her death certificate, number E620345 notes that she died en-route to Parkland Hospital. (Vernon H. Drewa, Jr. was born17 days after her death. He would have been her first great grandson. )

4-22-99:

Advised this date by cousin J. B. Arnold, that he located a voters list yesterday of Hawkins County for 1874 and James Tucker was listed.  It was not previously known that he had lived this long. This was Maggie's father.

4-8-2000

By accident, while entering data on the Mercer and Tucker families, I happened to find that Margaret and Branch Tucker were living with Rebecca Tucker.  Rebecca was the daughter of Williamson Tucker, who was a brother of James Tucker ( Margaret and Branch Tucker's father.)

Rebecca Tucker was the niece of James Tucker.  Rebecca was married to George Maxwell Long ( born February 10, 1818 and died after 1882). Georges father was John Long, and whose second wife, Sarah Ball was his mother. This information was obtained from the book, Long's Bend and Its People, written and compiled by Kay Caldwell and Sheila Johnston in 1997.  It is not known where they obtained this information.

Following is from Hawkins County Marriage Book 1874-1879:  John Shropshire to Margaret Tucker, May 28, 1874. "I solemnize the rites of matrimony between this above named parties on this 28th day of May A. D. 1874. /s/ W. J. Phillips, M. G.
